Sunshine Sketches: An Artist’s History of B.C.’s Beautiful Sunshine Coast by Terry Barker

Terry Barker is a widely recognised artist and author living and working on British Columbia’s beautiful Sunshine Coast. His workshop is the strip of land that runs along the shoreline from Port Mellon to Earl’s Cove and Egmont. He draws the fascinating buildings and sites that can still be found in what is even today largely pioneer land. Terry works in ink. He sketches his scenes in pencil, draws the outlines with ink pens, and, finally creates deep shadows with brushes and differing intensities of ink-an-water washes. Thus he gets the detailed accuracy is Virgo heart longs for, softened with the depth perspective that only broad brushes can supply. The resulting combination has brought him a considerable following for his Coast Independent newspaper featured column, Sunshine Sketches, which has been running since 1998. This book is a collection of Terry’s columns, rewritten, expanded and adapted to book format. He has grouped them into communities, each beginning with a hrief history. The book follows Highway 101, the lifeline of the Sunshine Coast, beginning at the south-eastern corner with Port Mellon and ending at Egmont, near the north-western extremity of the highway. In between, he supplies the histories of Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Wilson Creek, Davis Bay, Selma Park, Shishalh, Sechelt, Halfmoon Bay, Penda Harbour, Garden Bay and Egmont. Residents and visitors alike will find it a sweet souvenir of the lives and times of the people and places of the Sunshine Coast.
