Diddlebury The history of a Corvedale Parish The result of many years research, this is a history of Diddlebury that essentially looks at landownership and use to provide a picture of agriculture, of wealth and poverty, of fluctuating personal fortune, of the movements of people into and out of the parish, of the scale of estates and their management. In so doing, the lives and lasting influences of many of the larger landowners are recounted, but so to are the lives and conditions of many of the poorest. Thus hard work, bad luck, illegitimacy and gentle political activity are shown not to be the prerogative of any one ‘class’. In considering the ebb and flow of population, the changes in relative importance of the separate townships in the parish is brought to life, from Saxon to modern times, along with the construction and subsequent development of the major houses and farms. The tensions between the rector, the schoolmaster and major landowners are often highlighted, likewise the difficulty of having children attend school. The rise and fall of Methodism in the parish is charted, as is the way that the ‘main’ church, first Catholic and then Church of England, has handled its ministry and gently declined in influence. This study commends itself as an example of solid research presented in a most readable and interesting style.
